Charlotte Harbor is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charlotte County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,647 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Punta Gorda Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Charlotte Harbor is located at (26.963897, -82.062267)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), of which, 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (1.80%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,647 people, 1,771 households, and 823 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,671.9 people per square mile (645.9/km²). There were 2,277 housing units at an average density of 1,043.8/sq mi (403.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.67% White, 2.85% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.21% of the population.

There were 1,771 households out of which 10.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 53.5% were non-families. 48.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 34.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.77 and the average family size was 2.41.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 9.4% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 13.7% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 56.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 70 years. For every 100 females there were 73.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 69.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $29,468, and the median income for a family was $39,583. Males had a median income of $26,157 versus $19,097 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,211. About 4.5% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.6% of those under age 18 and 5.5% of those age 65 or over.

Notable events

On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley first made mainland landfall at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor.
